Funny you should mention that about the roots. I was reading about topping your roots and was like "That's a bit extreme" but after looking into it a lil more (not too much more) turns out its really not that bad. still nothing I would attempt just yet but opened my eyes a lil.If you don't already do so, let the top 2"-3" of soil dry out and before every watering run your fingers through the top 2" of soil. This will do a few things, 1) will disturb all of the eggs, larvae, walkers, and the fliers that are chillin out with their comrades , 2) as you're doing this you will feel "tiny" roots snapping through your fingers, this is good, kinda like topping, the broken roots will spread out even more and get strong (try not to break the larger roots that float across the top of the soil), 3) when you do water, the dispersion of the water will be a lot better throughout your smart pots. I know a lot of people use the plastic dixie cups, I don't like them. Two reasons: light penetrates through them and gets to your fresh baby roots that I feel don't need to be learning about light(stress) and second, the soil in them always seems to be wet, perfect breeding ground for fungus gnats.
