Good morning yall.
New guy here, old smoker, old guy (68), new grower (3 year) for this purpose, but experienced and long time gardener.
Started growing gardens at about 7 years old. My dad was a chemical engineer in the fertilizer industry where I also worked as a young man. I’ve grown aquatic plants, bog plants, and terrestrial plants of all types. I grow indoors and out.
Outdoor I grow 4 plants, the legal limit in Virginia. I use four 200 gallon smart pots, in full sun, with drip irrigation. For soil I use a mix of FoxFarm potting soils replacing 1|3rd of soil annually. For fertilizer a 20-20-20 water soluble fertilizer supplemented with CalMag for veg and a 5-50-17 water soluble fertilizer for flowering. Pots are spaced 10’ apart in a north/south line, and my property has a constant breeze. Only insect problem is caterpillars during flowering, for which I use Monterey BT. Winds are my biggest problem. My property, 80 acres, is the highest elevation around, and 50mph winds are not uncommon.
Indoors I have a three part setup. In a canning room with a 69 degree year round temp, I clone, start seeds, dry plants, and keep a couple of moms. In my barn (not climate controlled) I have a 4x8 tent I use for seedlings and veg. Here I have a 420 watt led veg light and I add up to two 256 watt led lights if I need them. For air circulation I have a six inch inline exhaust fan and 3 six inch fans for circulation. For flower I have a 8x8 tent, two 630 watt led lights, a RDWC 4 pot hydro setup with water chiller, and pH/EC/temp monitor for one side and four 7.5 gallon smart pots for the other side (these may be switched to RDWC but I haven’t decided yet). I have a portable AC unit I use when needed, a 50 pint dehumidifier with pump, an 8 inch exhaust fan with 2 six inch passive ducts to help cool lights, a 16inch box fan, 16 inch oscillating fan, and five 6 inch clip fans, along with a wireless monitor for temp and humidity. This setup is fantastic 7 months out of the year, and a PITA for 5 months when warm outside. Lights are on at night, off during the day. No carbon air filter.
I grow for myself. I don’t sell. I trim to grow fewer but larger buds, popcorn buds get tossed. I vape only when I have to for smell reasons. I don’t do concentrates, I smoke, and that old fashion joints rolled with 1.0 single wide ZigZag papers. The extra I end up with, I give away to friends and use as tips for people doing work on my house and property. I’m kinda dumb I guess. I grow more than I need for variety and give away 80% of it.
And that’s probably a lot more than anyone wants to know.
