So I have some seeds about a year or 2 old. I have them popped, are they ready to go in soil? The root is sticking out about half inch

Soon as you see a tap root get em in soil. Do not break off the tap root or it will die. I'm not a fan of germinating this way but that's just me.

They may be.. At seed crack I place them in a paper towel.. The seeds are lined up pointing down..
Fold up the paper towel(s) and place them into a plastic baggie.. Hang the baggie vertically were it is 75 to 80 degrees..
I give them about 24 hours to develop a 1" long tap root.. You can open the baggie to let air in once or twice,, I do if the seeds are very old.. I punch a hole in my coco to accept the tap and cover the seed.. Handle seeds with an extended tap very carefully.. The taps are straight and go into soil/coco very easily.. All that being said,, straight to soil may work just fine for you..

Best 'o luck
